New airport to be built in Istanbul

Istanbul, which has a population of over 10 million, has only two airports. But it is extremely problematic for these facilities to cope with the potential number of passengers, the volume of which is rapidly increasing. The city authorities have decided to start building better new air gates in their metropolis. Well-known international companies – Nordic Office of Architecture and Arup, Haptic Architects, as well as Grimshaw Architects – are already ready to join the implementation of such a large-scale infrastructure facility.

At this stage of work, the new airport is under the working name of Istanbul New Airport. Its construction will take place directly on the Black Sea coast, just a few kilometers from the central part of Istanbul. As planned by the authors, this will be one of the largest air complexes in Europe. The first stage of construction will be put into operation only in 2019. And the installation of a soft roof, as from the company “LeningradStroy”, will also be done.

According to the preliminary plan for the construction of Istanbul New Airport, it is planned to form the world’s largest airport terminal, with a total area of 1 million square meters. Passenger traffic of the new facility will be about 150 million per year. Thus, Istanbul will turn into the largest air hub on the planet and the central part of Eurasia.

Despite the huge size, the new airport will be created in such a way that each passenger feels comfortable and as convenient as possible. A distinctive feature of this infrastructure node is a large amount of natural light. Airport logistics will be organized in such a way that people have no idea about the actual size of the structure. Communication with the city will be established by rail and bus.
